For my Mom’s birthday, I decided to treat her for lunch at La Palapa, in Pittsburgh’s Historic South Side neighborhood. We’ve both been to La Palapa’s food stall at the Pittsburgh Public Market, and absolutely LOVED it! We’ve been wanting to dine at the South Side location, and my Mom’s birthday presented the perfect opportunity.

I loved the intimate space of La Palapa! Lots of warm and fuzzy feelings about this space! There was Mexican and Spanish music jamming on the radio. Also, the waiter and host was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and friendly!

Chips and Salsa
Chips and Green salsa from La Palapa! Best chips EVER, and the salsa verde was INCREDIBLE!
Our shared appetizer: homemade tortilla chips and salsa verde! Let me tell you, these were the best Mexican tortilla chips in the ‘burgh! I swear- you will not find better chips then at La Palapa! Also, the green salsa was INCREDIBLE! A great way to start our Mexican lunch adventure!

Cheese Enchiladas
The best cheese enchiladas I’ve EVER had (cover in green sauce, of course), with pinto beans and white rice!
My main course: cheese enchiladas with salsa verde, pinto beans and white rice. THE best Cheese Enchiladas I’ve EVER had! I swear, the green salsa added to the fabulous-ness of the dish! Plus, the pinto beans and white rice were AMAZING!

Even though my tummy was full when our waiter asked us about dessert, I happily said: “YES! What are you offering for dessert”? Luckily, he told me about the “off-menu, super secret dessert of the day”, that I was secretly hoping that he would mention:

Churros with Mexican Hot Chocolate
The “super secret, off-menu dessert”: Churros with Mexican Hot Chocolate!
Churros with Mexican Hot Chocolate! Ever since I sampled Churros in one of my Middle School Spanish classes, they have been one of my favorite desserts! Whether eaten alone, or dipped in the Mexican Hot Chocolate, they were HEAVENLY! I applaud you, and love you, La Palapa!

Mexican Hot Chocolate
Mexican Hot Chocolate = Absolutely FABULOUS!
This Mexican Hot Chocolate was soooooooooooooo good! I loved that it had a kick to it (our waiter said that cinnamon is normally added for a special touch). Perfect on the chilly day that we attended lunch!

So there you have it, folks! If you want the most authentic Mexican food in Pittsburgh, you MUST dine at La Palapa in the South Side. Conveniently, there’s a little lot (with a metered box) across the street from the restaurant. Thus, there’s no excuse! Whether you either live in Pittsburgh or are visiting, you need to go there!

Three Cheers to good food, fabulous art and cultural events,

How Amazing Cafe Quickly Became one of my FAVORITE Restaurants!

Amazing Cafe Menu South Side
The AMAZING menu at Amazing Cafe in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood!

*DISCLAIMER*: I do not seek monetary benefits from neither Amazing Cafe, Karen and Sean Conley, nor Gluten Free Goat Bakery. I am just a Pittsburgh Foodie, who enjoys sharing her foodie adventures. Photos were captured with an iPhone 5s, and edited with Instagram and Adobe Photoshop CS4.

One Sunday in April, a friend and I signed up to take a yoga workshop at my friend’s yoga studio in the South Side. Beforehand, we dined for brunch at the LOVELY Amazing Cafe, owned by Karen and Sean Conley of Amazing Yoga. I had only been to Amazing Cafe once (for the chocolate Vegan Bliss cake, which was INCREDIBLE); I made it my personal mission to return to Amazing Cafe for brunch. Here was my golden opportunity for brunch (cuz Lord knows that I love to brunch, especially in the ‘burgh)!

Gluten Free Goat Bakery Brownie
THE best brownie I’ve EVER had, from Gluten Free Goat Bakery (her baked goods are featured at Amazing Cafe)!

First: a brownie! I have been DYING to sample some of Gluten Free Goat Bakery‘s food; once again, the golden opportunity arrived! I must say: this was the best brownie I’ve EVER had! You would never know that this brownie was vegan, gluten-free, and soy free! Recently, I had the honor of meeting Jeanette (the Owner and Baker/Executive Chef of Gluten Free Bakery) at the Pittsburgh Public Market (where she know has a permanent space Wednesday- Sunday, from 10am-3pm). She is such a sweetheart; I really enjoyed talking to Jeanette about her business and her plans for the future! Whether you’re a vegan or a meat-eating carnivore, I suggest that you either track down a location that sells her baked goods, or go meet her down at the Pittsburgh Public Market!

Blue Zone Smoothie Amazing Cafe
The Blue Zone smoothie from Amazing Cafe- delicious!

My brunch beverage of choice was the Blue Zone smoothie, which contained: blueberries, almond butter, banana, hemp milk, dates. This smooth really was AMAZING! What really wowed me was that I did not miss the typical cow’s milk that is in a smoothie. The Blue Zone smoothie was still nice and thick, and I LOVED the purple color (so beautiful)! Plus, you can’t go wrong with blueberries, bananas and dates!

Tumlum Tacos
The legendary Tumlum Tacos (only offered at brunch on the weekends)!

The main event of brunch: Tumlum Tacos! This dish is only featured at brunch on the weekends. It’s definitely worth the wait! Vegan, local and sustainable ingredients! Lots of vegetables, bright colors, and great homemade fries in there, too (it’s Pittsburgh folks- you gotta have fries, even in your tacos lol). This was so refreshing; I didn’t miss the meat for one minute! Although, two tacos is a whole lot (I wouldn’t been happy with just one). It took every fiber of my being to finish the second one (lol). Maybe if I wouldn’t have already consumed a brownie and a smoothie (lol), I wouldn’t felt this way. Nevertheless, this was an EXCELLENT dish!

I really loved that the food left me feeling light; my body and soul were both so happy! I wish I could eat this like everyday (no joke). REAL food- no chemicals, no preservatives, no scientific ingredient names, just really good quality food, made with love.

Also: I LOVE that the two times I’ve been there for brunch, the owners have been brunching with their kids at the counter. Now THAT’S a sign of good business owners; not only are they selling and endorsing the product, they ARE living the product! I wish every business owner was so hands on; rock on, Sean & Karen!

I will definitely return to Amazing Cafe for brunch soon, and I have already purchased another baked good from the Gluten Free Goat Bakery at the Pittsburgh Public Market (and I plan to buy more from her, too)!
